Our research services cover both on-site and off-site work at our facility. We use online records and finding aids, and we visit federal, state, and local archives, including the U.S. National Archives, Presidential Libraries, Military Archive Centers, and State Archives. All original textual documents and microfilm are digitized at 300 dpi in JPG and PDF formats. Photos are digitized at 600 dpi or higher in JPG or TIFF formats.
On-site research takes place at the Air Force Historical Research Agency (AFHRA) at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. Due to limited airline service and few suitable lodging options, travel and lodging costs are significantly higher than the national average.
On-site research at foreign archives, such as the Bundesarchiv in Germany and the National Archives in Kew, UK, requires a minimum of one day.
On-site research in Far East archives will be conducted at the Japanese National Archives in Tokyo, the National Archives of Korea, and the National Archives Centers in Vietnam. This work requires at least five days.
This category covers in-person research at any U.S. archive, such as litigation research, atomic energy research, and projects that declassify Top Secret, Secret, or Restricted documents.
