On-site research at federal, state, or local archives includes visits to the U.S. National Archives, Presidential Libraries, Military Libraries, Military Archive Centers, and State Archives.
We conduct off-site office research at our facility using online records and finding aids. Our process includes preparing request forms, compiling research reports, digitizing and enhancing documents, and performing Optical Character Recognition (OCR). We use both in-house resources and online tools to complete these tasks efficiently.
On-site research takes place at the Air Force Historical Research Agency (AFHRA) at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. The area offers limited airline service and few suitable lodging options. Travel and lodging costs are significantly higher than the national average.
On-site research in foreign archives outside the United States includes visits to the Bundesarchiv in Germany, the National Archives in Kew, UK, and the National Archives of Japan in Tokyo. A minimum of eight hours is required.
This category includes research conducted in person at any United States archive. Examples include litigation case research, atomic energy research, and projects involving the declassification of Top-Secret, Secret, or Restricted classified documents.
